Cost of Living Relief : In a move welcomed by struggling households across the nation, the Australian Government has confirmed the rollout of a $275 Cost of Living Relief Payment beginning April 8, 2025.
The targeted payment comes in response to persistent inflationary pressures that continue to squeeze family budgets, particularly affecting essential expenses such as groceries, energy bills, and housing costs.
Announced last week by Treasurer Sarah Mackenzie, the one-off payment aims to provide immediate financial relief to low and middle-income Australians while the government implements broader economic measures designed to tackle the root causes of inflation.
According to Treasury estimates, approximately 6.4 million Australians will qualify for the payment, with funds to be distributed over a three-week period in April.

Payment Timing and Distribution
Services Australia has established a staggered payment schedule to manage the distribution:

“The staggered approach allows us to process approximately one million payments daily while maintaining our customer service standards for other programs,” Chen notes. “Most eligible Australians will receive their payment within the first two weeks of April.”
Cost of Living Relief Regional Supplements: Additional Support for Remote Areas
In recognition of the heightened living costs in remote regions, the government has announced supplementary payments for residents of designated remote areas:

Services Australia has established multiple channels for Australians to verify their payment eligibility:
Online Eligibility Checker
From March 1, 2025, an eligibility assessment tool will be available through myGov and the Services Australia website. After answering a series of questions about your circumstances, the tool provides an instant preliminary eligibility assessment and expected payment date if you qualify.
Services Australia App
The Services Australia smartphone application will display a notification about eligibility status for current payment recipients beginning March 1. The app will also provide estimated payment dates and allow tracking of payment status.
Phone and In-Person Services
From March 1, the dedicated Cost of Living Payment information line (1800-987-654) will operate weekdays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. In-person services will also be available at all Services Australia centers nationwide.
“We encourage people to use the online eligibility checker first if possible, as it provides immediate results without waiting,” advises Chen. “However, our phone and in-person services are fully staffed to assist those who prefer these options or have complex circumstances to discuss.”
Not Just a Federal Initiative: State Top-Ups
Several states have announced their own supplementary payments to further assist residents:

For many Australians, the $275 payment—while modest—represents meaningful relief during challenging economic times.
“It might not seem like much to some people, but that $275 will cover my power bill for the month,” says Elizabeth Carson, 72, a full Age Pension recipient from Launceston, Tasmania. “With everything going up in price but my pension staying the same, I’ve been having to make difficult choices between heating and fresh food. This gives me a bit of breathing room.”

“Remember that Services Australia will never ask for payment to process your entitlement, request your full bank account details via email or SMS, or ask for identification through unofficial websites.”
