Cost of Living Relief : In a move welcomed by struggling households across the nation, the Australian Government has confirmed the rollout of a $275 Cost of Living Relief Payment beginning April 8, 2025.

Automatic Recipients (No Application Required)

The following groups will receive the $275 payment automatically, without needing to apply:

  • Age Pension recipients: All recipients of full or partial Age Pension as of March 15, 2025
  • Disability Support Pension recipients: Both full and partial DSP recipients as of March 15, 2025
  • Carer Payment recipients: Those receiving the Carer Payment as of March 15, 2025
  • JobSeeker Payment recipients: Those who received JobSeeker for at least four weeks between January 1 and March 15, 2025
  • Family Tax Benefit recipients: Families receiving Part A with household income under $89,000
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders: Those holding a valid card as of March 15, 2025
  • Veterans’ Affairs pension recipients: Including Service Pension, Income Support Supplement, and War Widow(er)s Pension

Eligible Through Application

Other individuals may qualify but need to submit a simple application through myGov:

  • Low-income workers: Individuals earning under $55,000 annually who don’t receive any of the above payments
  • Full-time students: Receiving Youth Allowance, Austudy, or ABSTUDY
  • Self-employed individuals: With taxable income below $55,000 in the 2023-2024 financial year
  • Temporary visa holders: Certain humanitarian and special category visa holders meeting income requirements

“The automatic payment system ensures those already in our support networks receive assistance without bureaucratic hurdles,” explains Michael Chen, General Manager of Payments at Services Australia.

“For others who meet the criteria but aren’t currently receiving government payments, we’ve created a straightforward application process that should take less than 10 minutes to complete.”

Payment Timing and Distribution

Services Australia has established a staggered payment schedule to manage the distribution:

  • April 8-10, 2025: Age Pension, DSP, and Veterans’ Affairs pension recipients
  • April 11-15, 2025: Carer Payment and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders
  • April 16-20, 2025: JobSeeker Payment recipients
  • April 21-25, 2025: Family Tax Benefit recipients
  • April 15-May 10, 2025: Application-based payments (processed within 5-7 business days after approval)

All payments will be made directly to the bank account registered with Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Recipients without registered bank details will be contacted to provide this information before their scheduled payment date.

“The staggered approach allows us to process approximately one million payments daily while maintaining our customer service standards for other programs,” Chen notes. “Most eligible Australians will receive their payment within the first two weeks of April.”

Cost of Living Relief Regional Supplements: Additional Support for Remote Areas

In recognition of the heightened living costs in remote regions, the government has announced supplementary payments for residents of designated remote areas:

  • Remote Area Supplement: Additional $75 (total payment: $350)
  • Very Remote Area Supplement: Additional $125 (total payment: $400)

These supplements apply automatically based on the recipient’s registered address as of March 15, 2025. The classification of remote and very remote areas follows the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Remoteness Structure used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Services Australia has established multiple channels for Australians to verify their payment eligibility:

Online Eligibility Checker

From March 1, 2025, an eligibility assessment tool will be available through myGov and the Services Australia website. After answering a series of questions about your circumstances, the tool provides an instant preliminary eligibility assessment and expected payment date if you qualify.

Services Australia App

The Services Australia smartphone application will display a notification about eligibility status for current payment recipients beginning March 1. The app will also provide estimated payment dates and allow tracking of payment status.

Phone and In-Person Services

From March 1, the dedicated Cost of Living Payment information line (1800-987-654) will operate weekdays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. In-person services will also be available at all Services Australia centers nationwide.

“We encourage people to use the online eligibility checker first if possible, as it provides immediate results without waiting,” advises Chen. “However, our phone and in-person services are fully staffed to assist those who prefer these options or have complex circumstances to discuss.”

Not Just a Federal Initiative: State Top-Ups

Several states have announced their own supplementary payments to further assist residents:

  • Queensland: Additional $125 for electricity bill relief
  • Victoria: Additional $100 for all federal payment recipients
  • Western Australia: Additional $150 for registered seniors and health care card holders
  • South Australia: Additional $100 for households receiving Family Tax Benefit

“These federal payments provide a foundation, but we recognize that cost-of-living pressures vary across the country,” says Queensland Premier Andrea Murray. “Our electricity relief supplement addresses the specific challenges Queenslanders face with energy costs as we transition to more renewable sources.”

These state supplements will generally be applied automatically for eligible residents, with distribution methods varying by state. Residents should check their state government websites for specific details.

For many Australians, the $275 payment—while modest—represents meaningful relief during challenging economic times.

“It might not seem like much to some people, but that $275 will cover my power bill for the month,” says Elizabeth Carson, 72, a full Age Pension recipient from Launceston, Tasmania. “With everything going up in price but my pension staying the same, I’ve been having to make difficult choices between heating and fresh food.
